Actors Liam Neeson and Holly Hunter portrayed Abraham and Mary Lincoln. The performance included the intimate letters and public speeches of the Lincolns together with photographs of the famous couple and their family displayed on a large screen. The program was narrated by Harold Holzer. The event capped a day of planning for the 16th president's 200th birthday in 2009 by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and it's Advisory Committee. The performance took place in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress.

Harold Holzer spoke about President Lincoln's family in a speech titled "To See Ourselves as Others See Us: The Lincoln Family Album Re-Opened." Using a photographic slideshow, Mr. Holzer spoke about the Lincoln family album and photographs of family members. Following his presentation, he responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. The event was held at Hildene, the historic summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln.

In the Old State Capitol building, panelists talked about research on President Abraham Lincoln. This forum was one of the events that marked the opening of the Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield earlier that month. Following their prepared remarks, the panelists responded to questions from the audience. Mr. Schwartz moderated the panel.

They focused on his early childhood and the characteristics that he gained from his parents. They also discussed his family's reaction to his term as President. Scholars and guests examined the final stages of the Civil War and beginning of the Reconstruction era through the writings of President Abraham Lincoln. They paid particular attention to the Gettysburg Address and other writings of Lincoln. The program was telecast from the Gettysburg National Cemetery where Lincoln delivered the address in 1863 and included several items of interest from the site as well as a portrayal of Lincoln.

Mr. Holzer discussed with 5th graders the book he compiled and edited for young people Abraham Lincoln, The Writer: A Treasury of His Greatest Speeches and Letters. This book has a collection of writings beginning with rhymes in the margins of young Abe's arithmetic book and ending with official and unofficial words from the presidential years. The introduction offers a brief look at Lincoln's life as a man who valued the power of words. Each excerpt is offered with an introduction of its own, providing readers with a historical perspective, and a context that gives meaning to the selection. Lincoln's writings include personal letters, notes on the law, excerpts from speeches, debates, and inaugural addresses, letters to parents of fallen soldiers, and telegrams to his family.
