Gettysburg Address 145th Anniversary Ceremony

Wednesday, Nov. 20 marks the 145th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. A ceremony honoring the speech was held at Soldier’s National Cemetery in Gettysburg. Filmmaker Ken Burns and historian Harold Holzer are among the speakers at this event.

John Hope Franklin is the "dean" of American historians and a 1995 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is the author of From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans, now in its seventh edition. His latest book, My Life and an Era: The Autobiography of Buck Colbert Franklin, is an autobiography of his father that he edited with his son, John Whittington Franklin. He has served on several national commissions, including President Clinton’s Initiative on Race. Professor Franklin comments on his 50-year career teaching about Lincoln and African American history.

Actors Liam Neeson and Holly Hunter portrayed Abraham and Mary Lincoln. The performance included the intimate letters and public speeches of the Lincolns together with photographs of the famous couple and their family displayed on a large screen. The program was narrated by Harold Holzer. The event capped a day of planning for the 16th president's 200th birthday in 2009 by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and it's Advisory Committee. The performance took place in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress.
